Flight to Big Bear, California in a Cessna 172S

Here are a couple of shots from a recent flight up to Big Bear. The runway is at the far end of the lake and those brown streaks on the mountain are the ski slopes just a week before their first snow.

Hawaii Air

Topped off a quick get away to Hawaii with a sunset flight around Oahu and Moelkai. Hired an instructor and rented a Diamond DA40 airplane, then set out for instruction in local VFR flying over Diamon Head culminating in a loop around Molekai island at just 1,000 foot off the water. Beautiful. Landed back at Honolulu after cruising by the Waikiki coast, caught a ride to the main terminal, and then jumped aboard a jumbo jet for the red-eye back to LaLa Land. See pics here.

To Useless Bay and Back

Flew 185EV up to “Useless Bay” just because the name sounded fun and the weather was just begging for a flight. Useless Bay is on the south coast of Whidbey Island in the Puget Sound just north of Seattle.

Things were a little bumpy over land but once we were out over the Sound at 1,500 feet looking down on the ferries below, the air was nice and smooth.

The Evektor SportStar’s Garmin 496 GPS made it pretty easy to stay out of the Seattle and Everett airspace restrictions and the Garmin GTX330 TIS traffic system made it seem as if I had another pilot with me helping to keep an eye on traffic.

With the sightseeing done, and yes, true to the name Useless Bay looked pretty useless down below in spite of its beauty, it was time to head back to Renton airport for some touch and go practice on the newly paved runway service.

What a Day for a Birthday

Simply Couldn't resist!

When my birthday rolled around this year and the weather cooperated at the same time, I just had to take a vacation day and go flying!

And what a nice day for it. Cold; mid-30's on the ground and just 20 degrees Fahrenheit at 4,000 feet and well, OK it was a bit windy BUT the views made it worthwhile.

The Evektor SportStar ran well though the in-cabin heat struggled to keep up with the desired warmth level asked of it.

Could have flown for hours on end but had to settle for just two hours of flight time as another rental customer was waiting back at Renton Airport so it was back to the pattern and a full stop landing.

The “world’s first road legal bio-fuelled flying car” is essentially a 1,000lb (480 kilo) dune buggy with a fan motor and paragliding wing attached. It can reach altitudes of up to 15,000 feet (4,570 meters), with a normal cruising height of 2,000 to 3,000 feet (600 to 900 meters), and a flight range of 185 miles (300 kilometers).

Skycar runs on the ground on a biofuel-powered 4-cylinder, 1,000cc engine, accelerating from zero to 100 km/h in 4.5 seconds flat, has a top speed of 110 mph (180 km/h), with a range of 240 miles (306 kilometers), and an independent 4-wheel suspension to cope with the toughest terrain.

Want one? A mere $76k will get you connected. And it would seem it could fly under the Sport Pilot rules. How cool?

Well we got the SportStar up on one of those crisp, near-perfect Fall days here in the Pacific Northwest.

With the visibility through the SportStar's bubble canopy so accessible, we just couldn't resist snapping photos of the spectacular view.

New LSA SportStar Available Now

Well, it's been about 6 weeks since we took delivery of N185EV the first Evektor SportStar Plus for We Share Airplanes. And it has been BUSY on the flight line with AcuWings of Renton. We've seen almost 75 hours fly by in that 6 weeks as lots of folks wanted to give it a try. It's also turning out to be a favorite for training with it's low cost per hour and high fun factor. Following the Arlington Airshow last month, where lots of folks stopped by to talk about the SportStar in particular and Light Sport Airplanes in general, we have the good news of yet another SportStar being available to bring to the Seattle area!

This little red and white beauty, N923LA is available for outright purchase or better yet, shared ownership amongst interested folks. While Renton (KRNT) is the logical location for We Share Airplanes to place this plane, we're willing to locate it anywhere in the Seattle region where the right owner(s) can be coordinated.

These planes are as affordable to own as they are fun to fly. Aimed squarely at the Sport Pilot market with its simplified licensing requirements, the SportStar is also a great plane for private pilots who want a great cruiser for two. Private pilots with lapsed medicals should also explore the Sport Pilot regulations as a great way to get flying again.

A group of 4 folks could buy into N923LA with its GPS and great radio configuration for about $30k each plus low monthly fixed costs depending on where it's located. Given that she only has about 100 hours on her currently, you'd be buying a brand new airplane by nearly any count.
